The story of El Chapo will make some great movies. This article is from a longtime reporter of organized crime in Italy and Mexico who believes that a major rule of organized crime has just changed, which could have broad implications going forward. Historically, the worst kind of person you could be in a crime families eyes is a snitch. Your entire family (and in some cases generations of family) would be killed. Recently, one of the key witnesses to the El Chapo trial that helped put him in prison for life is the son of his business partner, El Mayo. His son snitched and by doing so will get a dramatically reduced sentence and family protection by the United States. Interestingly, however, there has been no retaliation against him, and it is suspected that instead of turning on the cartel and his father, he strategically snitched in order to remove El Chapo from power and benefit his father, who now runs the cartel. This could set a precedent for drug bosses using a sacrificial loyalist to give law enforcement agencies what they want in order to protect and benefit the bigger picture. Can’t wait for the movie. Would love to see Danny Trejo as El Chapo.
